About the Experience
The Art of Translation
Old Masters AI explores what happens when the visual traditions of art history meet modern generative tools.
Choose one of the Masters selected by the Librarian, describe a scene of your own imagining, and Saint & Specter will translate your idea into a detailed image prompt shaped by that Master’s visual language.
Rather than instructing an image generator to imitate an artist by name, the prompt draws upon characteristics of the selected Master’s work—such as medium, composition, line, light, color, atmosphere, perspective, and form—and applies them to your vision.
Copy the finished prompt and use it with the AI image generator of your choice. Saint & Specter does not generate or host the resulting artwork.
The Master serves as a point of departure, not a request for imitation. The goal is to explore historical visual traditions as a creative vocabulary for making something new. Any resulting image is newly generated and is neither an original work by the historical artist nor a reproduction of an existing artwork.

Old Masters AI is an experiment in artistic interpretation, education, and creative exploration. It invites visitors to encounter the visual traditions of historical artists not simply as names or styles to imitate, but as distinct artistic languages that can be studied, understood, and reinterpreted.
The Masters featured here were selected by the Librarian for their connection to the visual world of Saint & Specter and for the distinctive approaches to composition, technique, light, color, atmosphere, and form found in their work. When a Master is selected, those characteristics—not the artist’s name—are translated into creative direction for the resulting prompt. The aim is to draw from the vocabulary of art history while encouraging the creation of something new.
Saint & Specter does not generate or host the resulting images. Visitors receive a custom prompt that they may copy and use with an image-generation tool of their choice. Results will vary between platforms, and visitors are responsible for following the terms and policies of the services they choose to use.
The historical artists featured in Old Masters AI are deceased, and the historical artworks referenced by the project are in the public domain. Their inclusion is intended to encourage engagement with and appreciation for the artistic traditions they helped shape.
